Local Optometrists invest in revolutionary diagnostic equipment

Richie Dore joins long-standing family eye-care practitioner

Richard Dore Optometrists on High Street have recently invested in revolutionary diagnostic equipment, helping early detection of serious vision problems.  As the only Optometrist in Co. Kilkenny with this state of the art 3D Optical Coherence Tomography system (3D OCT), Richard Dore Optometrists can detect a number of common eye conditions at routine check-ups, such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, at no extra charge to their patients.

The 3D Optical Coherence Tomography system is an advanced, non-invasive eye scan that uses light technology to capture a digital photograph of the eye and is suitable for people of all ages. The high definition images can be reviewed on a PC screen immediately to identify areas of concern. The scan is quick and painless and is recommended for all patients but particularly those who have a family history of eye disease.

A recent report found that that 75-80 per cent of blindness is preventable and early intervention could save the state up to €76 million annually. Five people per week in Ireland went blind between 2010 and 2013, the report suggested that with an aging Irish population, the impact of vision impairment will grow substantially in the future. It also reported that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among the working age population.*

The business recently welcomed the next generation of optometrists to the family practice. Richard Dore has been joined by his son, Richie. Following in his father’s footsteps, Richie studied Optometry in DIT and went on to spend several years working in the UK specialising in glaucoma and children’s eye-care.

Today Richie brings his skills, experience and extensive training back to the prominent Kilkenny Optometrists.

Richard Dore senior, founder of the optometrists said, “Having worked abroad for several years Richie has gained a unique set of skills that complement what we already offer. We are very excited to have him join our practice and look forward to developing the practice and to continue bringing the latest technology to our patients.”

For over 33 years Richard Dore Optometrist has offered a bespoke personal eye-care service to patients across Kilkenny and the South East, including eye examinations, contact lens assessments and dispensing glasses along with eye-care and advice. Caring for the whole community the family run practice also offers free eye exams for medical card holders and PRSI employees and can provide home-visits for people who cannot leave their home.
